Death Has Terrible Timing

Episode 1

Death comes for Nina Bell. Nina has a chair.

Panels one and two. At midnight, in a candlelit shop full of clocks, Nina looks up sceptically: “Midnight. Even the clocks have stopped working.” Then the wall behind her cracks open and a tall pale man in black steps through in a swirl of smoke. Death: “Nina Bell. Your time has come.” Nina: “Did you just come through my wall?”Panels three and four. Death sits sprawled in the rubble beside a smashed wooden chair while Nina stands over him, arms behind her back. Death: “You struck Death with a chair.” Nina: “You entered through my wall.” Then the two of them read a glowing parchment together. Nina: “Born eighteen thirty-four? I'm thirty-four.” Death: “A minor clerical discrepancy.”Panels five and six. A broken pocket watch lies on the workbench, its glass shattered and green smoke rising from it. Death: “You broke my watch. Until it's repaired, I'm mortal.” Nina: “Does that come out of your deposit?” Finally Death slumps by the door, flushed and miserable, while Nina smiles at him. Death: “There is a terrible emptiness inside me.” Nina: “That's hunger. Try a biscuit.” The End.

Death is mortal now. Nina is charging rent.
