Panels one and two. Nina and Death sit side by side at a counter in her clock shop, a plate of biscuits between them. Nina: “Eat this.” Death: “I do not take offerings.” Nina: “Then buy your own.” Then Death, chewing and scowling, while Nina smirks. Death: “What is this?” Nina: “Butter. Try not to start a religion.”Panels three and four. Nina bends over his opened pocket watch under a brass magnifying lamp while Death leans in beside her. Nina: “I can fix the mechanism. The glowing nonsense may take longer.” Death: “That is primordial power.” Nina: “It's leaking on my desk.” Then the two of them side-eye each other. Death: “Then I shall remain here.” Nina: “You shall pay rent.”Panels five and six. Death smirks down at Nina. Death: “Surely my company is compensation enough.” Nina: “Your company owes me a chair.” Then Nina points him to a red velvet sofa among the clocks. Nina: “You sleep there.” Death: “I have never slept.” Nina: “Lovely. You've had centuries to practise lying down.”Panels seven and eight. Death looks down at Nina, uneasy, as she smiles up at him. Death: “What if I don't wake?” Nina: “I'll wake you. Promise.” Then, closer, both of them almost smiling. Death: “You would summon Death?” Nina: “At eight. You're sweeping.” To be continued.

Death has a broom now. Nina has customers.
