Panels one and two. Morning in the clock shop. Nina smirks sideways at Death, who sits rumpled on the red velvet sofa. Nina: “Did you sleep?” Death: “Briefly. Against my better judgement.” Then Death, frowning, with Nina leaning in beside him. Death: “My mind invented a duck that pursued me.” Nina: “Sounds like management.”Panels three and four. Death holds a broom and glowers. Death: “I have ushered kings into eternity.” Nina: “Then you can usher crumbs into a bin.” Then an elderly customer in a plum coat and cream scarf, a brass mantel clock in her arms, smiles at Nina behind the counter. Customer: “Nina, darling. Who's the handsome one?” Nina: “Temporary help.”Panels five and six. The customer smiles up at Death, who looks down at her. Death: “We have met.” Customer: “I think I'd remember.” Death: “You were under anaesthesia.” Then Nina, wary, beside a stony Death. Nina: “We don't discuss customers' near-death experiences.” Death: “What do you discuss?” Nina: “Weather. Their clocks. Absolutely anything else.”Panels seven and eight. Nina smiles with her eyes closed while the customer beams between her and Death. Customer: “Oh, keep him. Your last boyfriend never listened.” Death: “There was another?” Then Nina gazes up at Death, who glares at the broom in his fist. Nina: “You're holding the broom rather tightly.” Death: “I dislike the craftsmanship.” To be continued.

An ex walks in. The watch starts to tick.
